The X-TREM-1 case is 40.80mm wide by 56.80mm tall. At 15mm thick the overall package is quite reasonably sized being not too large or small. I look forward to getting it on my wrist soon. One thing I like about Claret's case designs are the slick angles and elegant curves. Whereas something like an MB&F is very machine inspired, and an URWERK is very modern industrial inspired, Christophe Claret pieces have an old-world charm that have been modernized but retain the grace of a Delage automobiles (for instance). You don't have to love all of his stuff, but the brand does "slick" nicely.

While I understand that high-end watches don't always make for a newsworthy stories, the industry can get more coverage when it is a bit more open. Dedicated watch media can have more "valuable" inside, while mainstream media can have more meat. Watch media needs to get more real before it can get more respect. The internet has made that possible for anyone to do. I highly recommend that the existing watch media publishing and journalism industry get together with the watch industry to discuss how watch media can be less marketing related, and more culture related.

From a function perspective you get a lot with any T-Touch family watch. Inside are Swiss quartz movements specially developed for Tissot by ETA. The combine an analog dial with a LCD screen. To operate the movement there are three pushers (rubber coated on this watch) as well as use of the receptive sapphire crystal. Inside the Sea-Touch is the ETA 48.301 movement which is a variation of the other T-Touch movements. To incorporate the diving features, some others have been removed that you can find on other watches such as the T-Touch Expert or T-Touch II. The Sea-Touch features include (in short): the time, second timezone, perpetual calendar, alarm, chronograph, temperature, compass, dive time meter, depth gauge, and logging functions. If you really want to know more about the movement's features and operation you can access the official Tissot Sea-Touch Instruction Manual here.

As you can see while the case is relatively simple, other elements of the watch have a more complex look. This includes the chronograph pushers as well as the dial. The best watches often choose either a complex case or complex dial - both can leave a watch looking too boring or alternatively too busy and cluttered. Though there are of course plenty of exceptions.

The watch is in steel and 42.9mm wide. Over on the back of the watch is a sapphire exhibition caseback and more honors to Kostya as a reminder of how he can kick your ass. Alternatively, if you are Russian, it is likely meant to be a reminder of how Russians can kick ass. Oddly enough, I think Kostya is based out of Australia even though he is Russian, but ... Whatever. Enjoy the uber-cheesy video that shows more.

MoVas is a unique brand for a couple of reasons. In a sense it is a sandbox for Singapore based designer Sean Wai. Not just a watch designer, Sean is a watch fan and enjoys designing timepieces. He isn't half bad either, and the look of MoVas watches are highly unexpected for an Asian brand (sorry if that sounds bad to anyone, but it is true in many instances) - which are often derivatives of European styles. There is a lightness and modernity to the design that makes it feel anything but something that is "living in the past." This is his first watch, simply called the GMT.

Over the dial is an AR coated sapphire crystal. Though due to its curvature it does get some glare. Much of the watch face is black-coated perlage which makes for a nice background. If you checked out the link above you'll see that the Marvin M014 I reviewed also had a perlage dial. The idea in a sense is to replicate the the look of gauges on old planes and automobiles.

Bulging corners on the watch part of the winch connection system. Only the top two ones are for operating the watch though. This is where the winch system comes in. Cabestan provides a tiny mechanical winch that you attach to the case. Attaching it to the left side allows you to wind the movement (which has a three day power reserve), and right side is for changing the time. It works beautifully in an oddly over-engineered manner. The winch itself is made up of about 40 parts. It is a testament to horology that something that like even exists as it sits on the tip of your finger and even has a sapphire exhibition window to see the parts. The internal mechanism mostly acts as winding limiter to prevent you from over-winding and damaging the movement.

The new movements are built on a Valjoux 7750 foundation and are interchangeable with the famous workhorse from ETA. The Valjoux 7750 is actually an amazing little machine. Continually refined for something like 30-40 years, it is not only the most popular Swiss mechanical chronograph calibre in the world, but also the base for a large number of other movements. As 7750 movements are so common, specialized movements using the same architecture are valued as they are less common and often much more attractive.

The potential pay-off is real. If you build a nice-looking watch you can made a handsome profit, given a reasonable margin on your production and design costs. Though, funding a large scale production of watches without an existing marketing is a very risky move. So how do you proceed?

Yellow or red accents are found in the chronograph hands as well as the stitching in the leather straps. The straps are porthole style, but don't got all the way through to protect the strap. It comes across as being a welcome style addition to the overall look of the design.

You can also get a 39mm wide version of the case. But stick with the 42mm wide as it offers the most bold look. It I can say one final thing about the case is that the polish and finishing make for a very pleasant tactile experience. Operating the watch is further hassle free and logical. One difference between this watch and the Rolex are the bracelet. Of course on direct comparison there are tons of differences, but what I mean here is that while the Rolex bracelet tapers, this one does not. What you like better is a matter of taste to be honest. Though I think on a day to day basis tapered bracelets are slightly more comfortable. They are also much more expensive to make.

The fact that the 47mm wide steel case frames what is in actuality a tiny dial for the time is even more funny/cute to me. "Aww, look how Fortis managed to fit in those time hands. Just the normal sized ones!" A full GMT watch dial on a large watch, in miniature. I didn't think that I would ever say that, but I did. Fortis is aware that this is a quirky (to say the least) model - and because of that the B-47 Calculator is strictly a limited edition (or 2012 pieces). Seriously, with all the watches Fortis is doing as a limited edition of 2012 pieces,  something awesome better come from them in 2012.

Most of the magic is in the dial with those great Supermarine inspired hands and hour markers. Christopher Ward offers its own interpretation on the hands design, and they result in something that is both highly legible and elegant to look at. The icing on the cake is the Christopher Ward trident logo counterweight on the seconds hand. Hands are the right size and for the GMT version there is a GMT hand in red. While the GMT hand is the right length, it is a bit skinny.

Book Review - John Reardon's Patek Philippe In America: Marketing The World's Foremost Watch Book Reviews

Attached to the case is a tapering metal bracelet that is also very much Patek Philippe inspired. Sitting comfortable on the wrist, I like the tapering a lot, as well as the style which has polished inner links mixed in with brushed elements. The deployment clasp is a bit unique as it is a butterfly tension deployment, but with the closing latch of a fold-over clasp. I've never seen that done before. When closed on the wrist the bracelet bottom is nicely unobtrusive.

Given the ease of changing straps and the 22mm lugs, I dug into my box of straps and found a couple that really change up the style. First off, a curved-end black calfskin from my Yes Inca. The ends don't quite fit, but I think with calfskin you could effortlessly wear the Blackbeard with a suit and no one would notice.
